This updated version of Brick Lamp is based on our original concept and prototype in 2010. The original idea of this project is to make people aware of the moment of concealing and revealing light. To make it a functional lamp, instead of a switch, light is activated when raised(on) or laid flat(off). Also by creating the side facets, a natural handle is made which also directs the light when the brick sits on it’s side. BRICK LAMP is powered by led panel light and rechargeable built-in lithium-ion battery with USB charging port. It can be easily hooked up to almost any power source. Three different materials are available which are aluminum, cast concrete, and solid wood.

Concept development
This project was originally an extended study of an earlier project “Shift Light”. After the group show “Innate Gestures” in ICFF with Shift Light. We kept digesting the concept and researching how humans interact with light through other objects. In the past, light was manipulated by covering it or being revealed like we use a curtain to block sunlight or a cap to distinguish candle fire. We want to recreate the experience of people pulling up the curtains on the windows in the morning to slowly light up the room.
Materials
– The concrete version of Brick Lamp is made from a special mix of cement and fine grain sands. It is cast in a high quality rubber mold to create a super fine and smooth finish.
– An alternative wood version is designed to suit your classic interior furnishing. This version is made from an authentic single piece of wood lumber, coated with an all natural eco-friendly clear stain to give it an elegant finish.
– The metal version is milled precisely out of a single piece of solid aluminum block by a Computer Numeric Controlled machine. To give it a sleek metallic touch, we use sand blasted matte finish on the bevels and brush texture on the top surface. The finished product then goes through an electric anodized process to permanently seals and protects the aluminum from rust and stain.
Use the lamp with cord attached or not. When attached, it supplies the power for LED inside and charge the lithium-ion built-in battery simultaneously. Once it is fully charged, the protection circuit will automatically disconnect charging. With normal using, the fully charged battery can last up to 5 hours
